I remember going to Joe's Cafe as a kid when it was located where Holdren's is now, at 512 State Street, and Maggie McFly's was where Joe's is now. The back room filled with smoke and the sourdough and salsa were flowing. (I didn't like the chunks of tomato and onion so I would soak up the salsa juice with the bread.)
Later in life Joe's Cafe was consistently the meet-up place with old friends for some food and a STRONG drink. Then when I moved back to Santa Barbara the front window booth was a favorite for the long lunches that sometimes turned into quite the gatherings as friends would happen by and came in for a "okaaay. Just one though."
And I will admit that as Old King's Road (next door) became a regular hang out for a few years, Joe's would frequently (and with a smile) deliver food.
I hope this piece helps flood your mind with memories of laughter and good times like it does for me.
